Hostels

There are a couple Hostels in the area which offer better location and cheaper prices than your average motel.

North Fork Hostel is located Northwest of West Glacier. The price is $15.00 per night. This place would get my first vote, because the manager has a blog.

Brownies Grocery & H.I. Hostel is located in East Glacier and costs around $25.00 per night.

I haven’t checked into availability yet, so let me know if you would want to stay in a hostel. With the size of group we have it may be difficult to procure a reservation.

A major contributing thought should be how far these places are from the trailhead and interstate. It would seem like a shame to add an extra hour or two onto our start day just because we stayed in a place on the other side of the park. Is there a major difference in the distance of each of these places to the trailhead?

Ryan, did you see the teepees? I was having flashbacks… We can camp at the hostels too if there is no room. I agree with Ryan though that the closest option to the trail is probably best.

Here are some “estimated” distances and times from civilization to Trail Head.

    Kalispell – 45 miles (55 min)
    West Glacier – 15 miles (20 min)
    East Glacier – 45 miles (50 min)
    Polebridge – 50 miles (1 hr 15 min)

The Northfork Hostel is in Polebridge, the Brownies Hostel in East glacier, and the available hotels are in Kalispell.

Our closest lodging would be West Glacier, but it would cost the most and probably be the most difficult to get a reservation since it’s so close to the park.

I’m still looking into all the options, but this is what I have so far.

And I agree, closet to the TH would be ideal.

Essex, MT is about 15 minutes from the trail head and they have a few hotels. This is by far the closest and one place seems fairly reasonable and still has some rooms.

Will we try to pick up the trail permit the day before we start or the day of? If the day of, it might be best to be near the most appropriate Ranger station rather than the TH.
