Grinnell Glacier Hike

July 26, 2007

We may have to do a different hike on the 4th.  The Grinnell Glacier Trail has been closed due to a carcass on the trail.  I’ve also heard that most of the trails in this area (Many Glacier) have been closed due to grizzly activity.

Guys up for a high line hike?

Books on Tape

July 25, 2007

Would you guys be up for some books on tape? If so any suggestions?

I can acquire, without going to the library, the Harry Potter books if anyone is interested (I don’t know about the 7th yet).

Fire Restrictions

July 24, 2007

Stage I Fire Restrictions
Stage I Fire Restrictions in Northwest Montana are now in effect. In Glacier, campfires are ONLY authorized in the approved fire grates in the 13 frontcountry campgrounds and picnic areas; campfires in the backcountry are NOT permitted. Fires solely fueled by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels are authorized.

Stage I fire restrictions also prohibit smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials. (Visitors cannot clear an area in which to smoke.)

Fire Updates

July 20, 2007

The past several weeks glacier had been both hot and dry, which generally leads to a high fire danger.

Some are even comparing the conditions to that of the 2003 season, when 135,620 acres burned.

What’s to come… How to get the latest news on Glacier National Park

July 19, 2007

Over the next several weeks I’ll be posting on a variety of topics.

  • Glacier News
  • How to pack for a week trip if you’ve never done it before.
  • Weather and Fire Updates
  • Trail and Campsite Status
  • Grizzly Bears
  • And Other Random Things

First Item: How to get the latest news on Glacier National Park?

1.) The best way to get the latest news on Glacier National Park is to go to Google News and search for “Glacier National Park”

An even cooler way of getting the news is to use a RSS feeder. Subscribe to the “Glacier National Park” search from Google News in your RSS feeder and then you don’t have to do any more searching.

2.) The GNP website has a news section that they update every once and a while.

3.) Go to some of the local news paper websites

4.) Wait till I post it on the blog.

Hot or Cold?

July 5, 2007

Well I’m glad we’re not hiking this week because it’s hot, hot, hot.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=mso&smap=1&textField1=48.27806&textField2=-113.61167

And there is a fire weather watch.
